Autumn highlights

With the school holidays almost over, thoughts to turn to the quieter days and glorious colours of early autumn. September and October are lovely times to visit Cornwall. The crowds are beginning to thin and it's much easier to get around and visit the county's most popular attractions.

The weather can be delightful at this time of year with sunny days and cooler evenings. All three cottages at Middle Colenso have wood burning stoves which are perfect for warming up after a brisk walk on the beach or South West Coast Path.

Here are the six events we're looking forward to attending over the coming months.

The Fowey, Jackson Foundation Gallery from September 2nd

Celebrated artist Kurt Jackson's new collection follows the River Fowey from source to the sea, as it cuts through temperate rainforest, salmon ladders, ancient woodland, estuary mudflats, creeks, maritime cliffs and more.

St Ives Festival, September 9th-23rd

An opportunity to enjoy live music, exhibitions, poetry and art at venues throughout the town. There will also be demonstrations, talks, tours and immersive workshops

Enys House Antiques and Decorative Fair, September 23rd and 24th

One of the best antiques fairs in the south west with dealers and exhibitors displaying their wares throughout the ground floor of the historic Enys House, its carriage houses, yard and gardens.

Porthleven Arts Festival, October 5th to 8th

Porthleven is best-known for its lively food scene these days but its arts festival is now in its third year and is a celebration of art in all its forms.

Proms at The Minack, October 6th, 7th and 8th

It's time to get your flags, horns and whistles ready. The Band of the His Majesty’s Royal Marines Plymouth will be performing Proms favourites at the spectacular open air theatre. Evening performances will include a firework display.

Falmouth Oyster Festival, October 12th -15th

This five-day event highlights the delights of the Cornish oyster harvest.

Watch cookery demonstrations or enjoy the views with a glass of champagne and oysters. You can also enjoy the delights of the Grand Oyster Parade, get involved in the shucking competition, or watch the working boat race.

Fit Forever, November 2nd to 6th

A bit of shameless self-promotion for Christen's autumn midlife fitness retreat. Carter's Croft is now booked but we still have availability for up to four people in the other two cottages. You can find out more here.
